The Braintree In-Person solution is designed to work with the Verifone Engage series payment terminals. Currently, we support the following devices:
It is not possible to use 3rd party acquired Verifone devices with Braintree. The reason for this is that we load proprietary Braintree encryption keys and Braintree software on the Verifone devices which allow for PayPal/Braintree to guarantee the security of the devices as well as the performance of our application.
The product is designed to allow for consistent expansion of in-person payment methods into the future. For more information about the solution's payment method coverage please take a look at our documentation.
Braintree offers test cards that simulate Visa credit and debit cards. If you would like to test alternative card types and card brands (such as Mastercard, Discover, or AMEX) you can acquire test cards from a 3rd party called B2 which can be found at the following link: .
For testing alternative payment methods such as PayPal or Venmo take a look at our .
No, the Braintree In-Person solution is designed to be integrated into Point of Sale (POS) software to initialize and handle the reader responses.
Semi-attended use cases can be supported where the device is within range and monitored by the merchants' staff. Unattended vending or fuel use cases require specialized hardware and are not yet supported.
The E285 reader can only communicate using 2.4ghz frequency band WiFi networks. Some mobile hotspots default to 5ghz. This can be resolved by changing the settings in your mobile device. For example, when using an iOS device this can be resolved by navigating to settings > personal hotspot > Toggle on "Maximize Compatibility".
This can sometimes occur when the reader is below a 20% battery charge. It is always recommended to make sure your E285 reader is above a 20% battery charge when using it to conduct transactions to ensure optimal performance.
To remedy this issue, fully charge your E285 reader, and start a new transaction attempt.
There are 3rd parties who have integrated Braintree into their IVR solutions for call center payments. For example, Twillio has an existing Braintree plugin for PCI-compliant IVR payments through their Programmable Voice solution as well as other Twillio products. To set this up with Braintree, you will need a Braintree account with API credentials which will need to be configured into your Twillio account "Pay Connector" configuration.
**Note that there may also be other Braintree-integrated IVR solutions available, Twillio is just one example.

Yes, if you reset your reader, the reader will lose its network connection as well as the offline certificate and screensaver image configuration. If the reader has stored offline transactions, those will also be lost. We do not recommend resetting or un-pairing a reader in production unless it is required.
